‘The experience of teenagers and young adults treated for cancer in an adult setting’
My name is Steve Marshall and I'm conducting this research as a student on the PhD Programme in the Faculty of Health and Medicine at Lancaster University, Lancaster, United Kingdom. If you are interested in helping thsi research project, please contact me after reading the Participant Information Sheet:
What is the study about?
The purpose of this study is to explore what is like for young people to be treated for cancer amongst adults of all ages, rather than have treatment in an age-specific care setting.
Why have I been approached?
You have been approached because the study requires information from people who were treated for cancer on an adult unit and were between the ages of 16 and 24 at diagnosis.
Do I have to take part?
No. It’s completely up to you to decide whether or not you take part.
What will I be asked to do if I take part?
If you decide you would like to take part, you will be asked to take part in an informal interview. The interview should take about 45 minutes and I am the only interviewer. You can choose to be interviewed by phone, on Skype or face-to-face. You can withdraw from the study at any time and ask for your interview to be withdrawn up to two weeks after the interview.
Will my data be confidential?
The information you provide is confidential. The data collected for this study will be stored securely and only I will have access to this data:
- Audio recordings will be destroyed and/or deleted once my PhD thesis has been examined.
- Audio recordings will be transcribed by a professional transcribing service. Recordings will be given to the transcribing service on an encrypted mobile device which will be returned to me after the transcription and then destroyed.
- Audio recordings will be stored in encrypted files on my laptop (so no-one other than me will be able to access them). They will be backed up on my Lancaster University secure drive. The laptop itself is password protected. The written transcriptions of the interview will be kept for 10 years after the study has finished and then destroyed/deleted.
- The typed version of your interview will be made anonymous by removing any identifying information including your name. Anonymised direct quotations from your interview may be used in the reports or publications from the study, so your name will not be attached to them.
There are some limits to confidentiality: if what is said in the interview makes me think that you, or someone else, is at significant risk of harm, I will have to break confidentiality and speak to my supervisors about this. If possible, I will tell you if I have to do this.
What will happen to the results?
The results will be summarised and reported in a PhD thesis and may also be submitted for publication in an academic or professional journal. All participants will also be sent a short summary of the general findings.
Are there any risks?
There are no risks anticipated with participating in this study. If you experience any distress you will be able to stop the interview at any time. If you experience any distress following participation you are encouraged to inform the researcher and contact the resources provided on the attached sheet.
Are there any benefits to taking part?
Although you may find participating an interesting experience, there are no direct benefits in taking part.
Will participants be offered any expenses?
Participants who prefer to be interviewed face-to-face will be offered travel reimbursement, to a financial limit of the value of a London Underground one-day travel card (currently £8.50). Participants who live outside London will not be offered any additional travel expenses above the £8.50, but can still participate by Skype or telephone.
Who has reviewed the project?
This study has been reviewed by the Faculty of Health and Medicine Research Ethics Committee, and approved by the University Research Ethics Committee at Lancaster University.
